Workshop – 4 Saturdays – October 24, 31, November 7, 14
A transition from drawing to painting can be daunting. A traditional step in artistic education was working in oil paint but without the added difficulty of color. This was known as grisaille painting and is a great introduction to learning to use oil paint through honing drawing and values.
In this class, Iliya will paint 2, 6-hour grisaille portraits in oils. Different techniques will be introduced, such as the alla prima block-in and glazing in details. Student’s will also experiment working on two very different surfaces, Canvas and Bristol Paper, to highlight the distinction in paint adhesion and surface absorption that can create incredible effects in a painting.
Students will paint alongside Iliya and participate in critiques of the previous week’s work at the beginning of each session through Zoom and IPad screen sharing.
