Floral and Figure Painting with Dennis Perrin, May 17-19, 2021

Dennis will help you realize your potential as an artist by going beyond materials and techniques. Creator of The Perrin MethodTM, Dennis’s teaching covers not only the technical aspects of painting, but also the thought processes behind painting with special emphasis on the power of belief and intention. The principle subject will be a floral still life in oil but may also include some outdoor painting in a garden or with a figure in the scene.

Atelier Policies

REGISTRATION
Registrations for Core Classes, Apprenticeship and Sessions are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, beginning on the day stated on the website and print materials. Full payment for atelier core classes and sessions is due upon your completed and signed registration. Atelier core class tickets and session tickets are non refundable and non-transferable. Students may register for classes and sessions over the phone or in person.

DEPOSITS
Full payment for atelier core classes, apprenticeships and sessions is due upon your completed and signed registration.

WAITING LISTS
When a class or session is full, interested students may sign up on the waiting list. Students are notified of openings in order as they sign up. Once notified of an opening, the class/session fee must be paid at this time or their place on the wait list will be forfeited.

CANCELLATION
The Southern Atelier reserves the right to cancel the scheduled class/session on the basis of insufficient enrollment or due to circumstances beyond its control. Full refunds will be made if the atelier cancels a class/session.
There are no refunds for no-shows or withdrawals from participation in classes, sessions or apprenticeships on the part of the student.

DISMISSAL
The Southern Atelier reserves the right to dismiss any student whose conduct is inappropriate. A refund will not be given.

SUBSTITUTION
The Southern Atelier reserves the right to provide qualified substitutes for its scheduled instructors in the event of professional or personal changes in the class/sessions schedule.

STUDENT WORK
The Southern Atelier reserves the right to retain any student work, on a temporary basis, for exhibition and promotional purposes.

SUPPLY LIST and ART SUPPLIES
Supply lists will be available upon receiving completed and signed registration and full payment. Please bring all required supplies listed for the applicable class.

Please Note: The school is not responsible for providing refunds or credits for sessions missed as a result of illness, emergencies or other events beyond our control; however extenuating circumstances will be evaluated on an individual basis.

ATELIER WORKSHOP POLICY

REGISTRATION
The applicable deposit for domestic workshops is due upon your completed and signed registration. Early registration is encouraged, as many workshops fill quickly. Students may register for workshops over the phone, by mail or in person.

2) To register for a workshop by mail, send completed and signed Workshop Registration Form plus the applicable non-refundable deposit amount (per workshop/per person) to:

DEPOSITS
A non-refundable workshop deposit of $100 per person is due upon submission of completed and signed application. The remaining balance is due 30 days prior to commencement of the workshop. Applications are taken in order of deposits received.

WAITING LISTS
When a workshop is full, interested participants may sign up on the waiting list. No deposit is required to be on the waiting list; however, once a student is notified of an opening, the non-refundable deposit and balance due must be paid at this time or their place on the list will be forfeited.

CANCELLATION
The Southern Atelier reserves the right to cancel the scheduled workshop on the basis of insufficient enrollment or due to circumstances beyond its control. If the workshop is cancelled by the workshop instructor or The Southern Atelier at any time students will be completely refunded.

Should a student need to cancel for any reason:

90 days before commencement of workshop:
Loss of 50% of the cost of the workshop per person excluding the understood and agreed non-refundable deposit.

89 days or less before commencement of workshop:
Loss of 100% of the cost of the workshop per person.

Time of cancellation will be when written notice is received at The Southern Atelier.

TRANSFER POLICY
All domestic workshops are non-transferable.

FLIGHTS
The Southern Atelier is not held responsible should delays, cancellations or problems result from your flight carrier going to/from workshop destination. We strongly encourage all students to buy refundable airline tickets in case of workshop cancellations or other unforeseen changes.

WORKSHOP LOCATION
Most domestic workshops are held at the atelier. Plein air workshops will meet at the atelier on the first day unless otherwise noted. Directions are on our website. Call if you have questions

CHANGES
The Southern Atelier reserves the right to modify a workshop (i.e.: logistics, inclement weather, etc.) should the situation deem necessary.

Plein air workshops require students to bring their own travel easel.   Those who will be flying to a Southern Atelier workshop venue will be given additional information regarding traveling with artist’s materials.

TRAVEL & LODGING
The Southern Atelier is located minutes from The John and Mabel Ringling Museum, downtown Sarasota and the beautiful Gulf Beaches. We are approximately a 10 minute drive from the Sarasota International Airport (SRQ) and 60 minutes from Tampa International Airport (TPA). Workshop students will need to rent a car or arrange for transportation.

Supply List

Paints
I have, for over a decade, used Winsor Newton Water Soluble Artisan Paints. I went this route because of the health considerations of eliminating the need for solvents in my studio. I have been exceedingly pleased with the feel, tinting strength, and archival quality of these paints. No one who sees my work has ever said anything about the paint other than ask what I use because they loved the rich quality and purity of color in my work. I have no hesitation in recommending these paints to anyone. We’ll discuss in detail about the palette and the paint, and for now I’ve listed my colors below. I also prefer the large, 200ml tubes when possible.

• Cadmium Yellow Light
• Cadmium Red Medium
• Cadmium Red Dark
• Alizarin Crimson
• Cerulean Blue
• Cobalt Blue
• Ultramarine Blue
• Viridian
• Ivory Black

Brushes
A good, responsive brush is an essential. And the brush should always fit the artist’s intention. I like to use a combination of Brights and Filberts. I use the Filbert in the drawing phase, I switch to the Bright for the massing of the value shapes, then back to the filbert for the finishing stage. There will be much more about this during the other modules. But here’s my list of recommended brushes. Choose liberally between Artisan, Silverwhite, or DaVinci Brands. Currently, I’m using the Rosemary Brush, Shiraz, Short Flats and Filberts. I love them and find they hold up well. They’re all equally good, though, and work extremely well with the Water Soluble Paints. Even before I began water soluble, I switched to the nylon bristle brush. I found I liked the feel and the “snap” of the nylon better than natural bristle. And the nylon retains their shape over the long run much better than natural bristle. But that choice remains individual. Brights: An array of brights from very large, 24, 22, 20, all the way down to 4. Typically an array would be 24, 20, 18, 14, 12, 8, 6, 4 or so in the Artisan numbering. Note that the numbering system for Artisan brushes is different from the others. The largest Artisan is 24, and is equivalent to the 16 in the other systems.

Filberts: Since the blocking of the painting is done mostly with the brights, it’s not necessary to have as many filberts. I like an 8, 6, 4, and 2. That way I can accommodate just about any linear or lacey stroke needed with a filbert.

Medium
You will also need a high quality painting medium. If you use the Artisan paints, I recommend the Artisan Painting Medium. It allows the paint to flow easily onto the canvas without influencing the drying time. If you are using conventional oils, I suggest a medium that increases flow without accelerating or decelerating the drying time.

Palette
This is mostly a personal choice. I really prefer a large wooden palette made from hardwood. I use a 16″ x 20″ piece of birch plywood, sanded on the edges to prevent splinters, and oiled several times to create a non-porous surface. I like to have plenty of room to mix my paint.

Canvas
I recommend small canvases, 8″ x 10,” for practice. It’s important to work small as you’re acquiring a grasp of the method. If you’d prefer to work larger, then 12″ x 16″ or slightly larger will work.

Palette Knife
Be sure you have a quality palette knife to keep your palette clean and to scrape off any canvas that you need or wish to. The knife is not for painting, only for scraping.

Other materials
You will need rags or paper towels, a container for rinsing brushes, a quality easel, a table for materials and palette, and a properly lighted environment.
