This class is about painting alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. On the first days students will paint still life. We’ll tone the canvases with different colors of acrylic paint before we paint with oil. David will be discussing the basics (composition, value, color, light and shadow) and how to simplify the forms. On the last days of class we’ll have a live model. We’ll start by sketching and placing the figure, blocking in a mid-tone, then adding darks and lights. By learning to simplify form, values and color, we learn to interpret and break down our subject, whether still life or figurative, into more understandable tones and shapes instead of becoming distracted by details. This helps us to paint our subjects with greater clarity and directness. This class will be particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely and to paint their subject with greater economy.
