Jan. 19-21, 2018. Red Chalk Drawing- An Expressive Journey with Charles Miano

Join Southern Atelier Founder, Charles Miano, on a journey of expression as he teaches the secret fundamentals of Red Chalk Drawing in large format. Charles has devised a method of using Red Chalk that reflects his love and admiration of the Old Masters while at the same time communicating inner expression and contemporary elegance.

Artists will learn to go beyond the basics and begin to express their deepest intentions along with emotion, spirit, time and consciousness.

Life, naturalness and expressive spontaneity will also be stressed as well as form, function and anatomy.

Charles will explain the nuances of red chalk drawing as it applies to direct observation of the live model. Blocking -in shapes, tone masses, edges as well as morphology will be explained and demonstrated throughout the workshop. Artists will learn important technical aspects of the medium including how to stretch paper and a special sizing preparation. In addition, Charles will expound upon the historical importance of red chalk and how Masters such as Michelangelo, Leonardo and Raphael all utilized it’s tremendous potential.

Large Cradled Panel Drawing Board: Brown hardboard cradled with braces.

(paper will be stretched on the Cradeled Panel)

Preparation: Stain: 1 part amber shellac, 2 parts clear shellac, 8 parts Isopropyl alcohol (91%) Liquitex clear gesso
