April 14th – 16th, 2014 9:30 AM – 4 PM

This three-day workshop will unfold in a relaxed, fun, and yet, informative and intense, working environment. Each morning Romel will demonstrate his approach to painting a portrait from life by means of a direct and fluid painting style. Strong emphasis will be placed on improving color use, drawing skills, value relationships, and capturing the “feeling” of light.
We will learn to use the elements that make a painting stronger and exciting: creative use of color & edges, visual movement, paint application/ brushwork, distribution of abstract shapes and strong design. Techniques of past great artists like Sargent, Zorn, Sorolla, etc. will also be explored.
All levels are welcome – and as they will be different, the instruction will be individualized for each student’s specific needs.
Be prepared to work hard, make new friends and most of all – have fun.

November 8 – 10, 2013 9:30 AM – 4 PM

This workshop is suitable for all levels of ability and will help the student unlock the mystery of color, and its use in describing light, in portrait and figure painting.  John studied with American Impressionist Henry Hensche during the last ten years of Hensche’s life.  In this workshop you will be introduced to the unique method of color study developed by Hensche and his mentor, Charles  W. Hawthorne at the famed Cape School of Art in Provincetown, MA.

The figure in sunlight is the quinessential Impressionist motif, and Lido Beach in Sarosata is an ideal location for this fun and informative workshop.  In addition to color we will explore how to set up the “action” of the figure, proportions of the head and figure, and other aspects of painting a vibrant, realistic, portrait and figure.   Instruction will include demos, as well as one-on-one instruction at the easel.   John will also provide full-color handouts for students.

Gene Costanza

LJ's vineyard Costanza_webGene Costanza is a contemporary realist painter of traditional subject matter, focusing primarily on landscape.

Costanza orchestrates paintings that engage the viewer and invites them to enter his world. By capturing the light and atmosphere, the feel and smell, the wind and wave, he hopes to share places that mean something to him and the moments that evoke common feelings we share. One person summed it up with, “I love to watch your landscapes.” Task accomplished in that case.

Russian Academic Drawing Workshop with Iliya Mirochnik October 10 – 13, 2013 9:30 AM – 3:30 PM

[singlepic id=70 w=300 h=300 float=left]

Russian Academic Drawing Workshop with Iliya Mirochnik

October 10 – 13, 2013    9:30 AM – 3:30 PM

During this masterclass we will study drawing in the manner of the Repin State Academy in St. Petersburg, Russia. The goal is to imagine and experiment with an approach that makes the transition from drawing to painting as seamless as possible. Over the course of four days students will produce both a portrait (size approximately 16x20in) and a large scale nude (approximately 25×50), in  charcoal, sanguine, or sepia. They will also learn how to construct a large drawing surface, to stretch paper, and to prepare an underlying tone for the paper.

The class  will focus on 2 main elements:
1. Composition:
The course will stress an ongoing dialogue between the artist and the model through drawing,  as the former develops the freedom to continuously alter what unfolds in their personal search of the most effective composition.
2. Anatomy and Construction:
In order to attain that freedom necessary to produce a good drawing, it is important for an artist to really know what exactly they are drawing. This is achieved through the analysis of form and light in relation to the mechanisms of the body – and is the main tool used to create dramatic, dynamic, and strong compositions. Knowing the form allows one to depend less on the actual model so that one can focus more on what is most beneficial for the drawing itself.

Iliya Mirochnik is an artist who works primarily in traditional media. He believes that only through a careful and studious analysis of the artists and art of the past can one develop a firm stance in order to create something truly meaningful in the present. Precisely for this reason, Iliya chose to study in the prestigious Repin State Institute of Fine Art in St. Petersburg, Russia, where he received his BFA in 2011 and is currently continuing in the MFA program. The Academy is known for emphasizing the teaching of classical rigorous disciplines, rooted in the 19th century, of painting, drawing, and composition.

Figure & Portrait Painting Workshop with Hodges Solieau

September 14 & 15, 2013    9:30 AM – 4 PM

In this weekend workshop, acclaimed artist Hodges Soileau will demonstrate how to begin a painting in various ways. He will encourage each artist to remain open to possibilities, depending on the situation, and one’s own temperament. “Having options in their arsenal” allows an artist to tackle any subject, and prevent them from becoming a formula painter. Hodges will impart some of the principals that he considers most important while working in oils or any medium that uses color. He will also demonstrate, explain and stress the principals of shape, value, edges, and color temperature.
